Playing with Rhino3D ver 4

  • New software releases are a gift and a challenge. Lots of new toys to explore, subtle changes in work flow
  • Version 4 offers many new tools and expands the capabilities of many of my old ver 2 tools, it also makes much larger files and will fatally choke on some stuff which wasn't any problem in the past. Still learning, some of the problems are probably my doing, but it's generally kid in the candy store time. And with care I can use which ever version works best for any particular task
  • The toolpath was generated from the flat model, milled with a rotary A axis replacing the Y axis. The red in the model is a surface .75mm below the ring to insure the pierced areas really get pierced.

Finished Ring in Sterling

  • Hand rework to enhance details which don't mill well
  • Cast and rough hand clean up
  • Magnetic burnished, oxidizied, vibratory tumbled with abrasive media, rotary tumbled and final hand polished.

CNC designing really does open many doors in terms of accuracy and the possibility of very intricate designs which otherwise would not be cost effective, but the finishing bench work does get more complex.
