Knot Band Ring

  • Modeled in Knots3D and Rhino
  • machined in wax with rotary axis replacing the mill's Y axis
  • finger hole bored on lathe
  • investment cast
  • oxidizied and polished

Model (for milling purposes only)

  • The knot was created in Knots3D and modeled with a triangular cross section
  • After importing the mesh to Rhino one face of the triangle was extracted
  • This planar knot is suspended over a surface (which will be inside of shank) and the tool path generated for a rotary axis milling
  • With carefull attention to the model's end geometry and milling parameters the knot becomes endless
  • (I am exploiting the fact that the mill can't cut undercuts to GREATLY simplify the model)

Model (fancy render version)

  • Here the milling model has been used to create a 'solid' version for visualization
  • depth is added to flat working model
  • ring shape created by rolling surface meshes of finished working model (the small gap being left at 'seam' is closed before generating milling toolpaths)
