Celtic Greenman Carving Reproduction

Art

  • Sometimes a recreation of an existing object is needed
  • Original .jpg art of carving
  • It is easier and more accurate to work from multiple views but one can suffice when artistic liberties are taken.

Model

  • Rhino model manually built using art for reference.
  • There are software solutions for transposing 2D images into 3D models. Height fields derived from greyscales might be usable to create 3D photos but not a high relief model. I find that tracing from a background image works well. Sort of a loose freehand photogammetry technique.
  • This model represents about a days work, including quick test mills to verify the appearance of the actual piece. 'What You See Isn't Always What You Get' especially when changing mediums.
  • A further possibility is to model the thickness and mill from both sides...maximum control of weight without inadvertantly compromising castabality.
