Domed Round Knot Ring

  • Modeled in Rhino with knot from Knots3D
  • machined with rotary axis replacing the mill's Y axis
  • investment cast
  • dome in centre fabricated in silver
  • prepolished and assembled
  • oxidizied and finish polish

Model

  • Rhino model showing domed centre which was fabricated in silver for the actual ring
  • the knot was created with Knots3D
  • with the knot's basic geometry being used for reconstruction in Rhino, simplifying its manipulation. Here the knot does have depth, but only really needed for making a nice rendering.
  • Once the model was finished surface meshes were generated and these were 'unrolled' for machining with a rotary axis replacing Y

Model variation

  • re-using the knot and its modifications with a new shank
  • CAD/CAM makes it almost too easy to try to perfect a design. Not only nice visualization tools to use before starting but I can be milling the improved variation while finishing the first itteration.
