Silver Dragon Pen

  • I haven't been turning wood pens (yet) but my friend Jim Cunningham does.
  • We have been working together to develop sterling silver pen hardware.
  • This is the first prototype, a desk pen using a base of Vermont iberville shale
  • If you want a complete pen Jim does some very nice work
    Vermont Hardwood Pens
  • Or just the silver hardware is available from me, and additional designs are pending,
or I'll work with you on custom creations.

Modeling Renders

  • The modeling process mainly involved designing in 'the round' and then un-rolling for milling but there was more than average flipping between the two formats.
  • As normal I am not modeling details which don't matter for milling, this is not an attempt at photo realism nor a model for a build type of machine.
  • The internal geometry of the parts defined by a steel surport mandrel for the nib and post milling manual lathe work for the other two parts
  • After milling and casting the waxes I made rubber molds for limited production... even with all of the fancy tools the final finish and fit still has to be done by hand on each individual piece.

Second generation Refinements...

  • A second pen by Jim, this time in ebony, again with an Iberville shale base
  • With much better proportions on the knot band; the needed refinements were just on my work
  • Pens are available (in many different woods) from Jim at Vermont Hardwood Pens
  • And for pen turners, the silver hardware set (or almost any other custom design) directly from me
